Power bank and wireless charger recall in South Africa

US-based consumer electronics giant Belkin has notified the National Consumer Commission (NCC) of a recall of its BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger for the Apple Watch and Power Bank 10K BPD005.
The NCC published a statement notifying the public of the recall. Customers who purchased the product can fill out this form to request a refund from the company.
The recall relates to a fire hazard, where manufacturing defects may cause the portable wireless charger’s lithium battery cell component to overheat.
“The Belkin BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger for the Apple Watch + Power Bank 10K, BPD005 is sold online and through Fast Forward (Pty) Ltd,” the NCC said.
“The product was made available in the market in June 2023. Consumers who have this product are urged to discontinue use, dispose of the product and contact the supplier for a full refund.”
According to the Foxconn-owned Belkin, manufacturing defects may cause the portable wireless battery charger’s lithium cell component to overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
The NCC said it is monitoring the recall based on Product Recall provisions within the Consumer Protection Act.
Those who wish to request a refund from Belkin must provide personal information such as their names, email addresses, phone numbers, and residential addresses.
Customers must also provide device information, including a serial number, product photo, and proof of purchase.
The company is instructing customers to discontinue using the wireless charger and dispose of it.
