Vumatel fibre price increases

Vumatel is increasing the wholesale prices of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) products, effective 1 April 2025.

A MyBroadband forum member who is a customer of Internet service provider (ISP) Mind the Speed shared an email from his provider explaining how the adjustments would impact its customers.

“Vumatel have announced pricing changes across their FTTH products, the new product pricing will replace the existing offers as of 1 April 2025,” Mind the Speed said.

“To account for this change, your monthly subscription fee for your fibre package will be adjusted per the table below.”

The table provided showed seven Vumatel packages available from Mind the Speed would have their prices adjusted by between R20 and R80, working out to wildly varying percentage-based hikes.

The lowest increase in both real and relative terms is on the top-end 1Gbps package, with its R20 hike working out to a nearly negligible 1.3% hike.

The biggest relative price increase is on the entry-level 50/25Mbps product, which is being hiked by 11.8%.

Vumatel’s precise adjustments in wholesale prices are unknown, although these are typically not shared publicly due to being competitively sensitive.

Earlier this year, Vumatel told MyBroadband it would be implementing “nominal” adjustments to its pricing from April.

The country’s biggest FNO explained these changes were required to account for current market conditions, inflationary pressures, and general operational cost increases.

“However, we will ensure that the services remain affordable and competitive within the broader market,” Vumatel said.

Vumatel’s main rival — Telkom-owned Openserve — is also hiking its wholesale pricing from April.

It should be emphasised that pricing adjustments will vary from one ISP to the next and that the rand-based or percentage-based increases relevant to Mind the Speed customers won’t apply to other ISPs.

Those Vumatel customers who have not been notified of pricing adjustments will likely receive notifications in the coming weeks.

MyBroadband asked Vumatel for more details on its FTTH pricing adjustments but did not immediately get a response to our query.
