Takealot’s Amazon Prime rival cooking

Takealot’s delivery perks and exclusive deals subscription service TakealotMore has shown exceptional growth in recent months.
The South African e-commerce giant launched the plan in May 2024, shortly after Amazon debuted its local marketplace.
Similar to Amazon’s popular Prime subscription, which has not yet rolled out in South Africa, it offers free and expedited deliveries on a wide range of marketplace products.
These can include same-day or next-day deliveries and collections on both Takealot.com and the on-demand Mr D food and groceries service.
Takealot previously told MyBroadband that the subscription had seen an “overwhelmingly” positive response in its first month of availability. Ten months in, the service is still seeing strong adoption.
The company told MyBroadband that members had grown 320% over the last six months.
“This strong uptake shows how much shoppers appreciate the convenience and savings that TakealotMore offers,” the company said.
Takealot said that the service had definitely made a meaningful contribution to its overall revenue, as members on the service were shopping approximately 70% more often than non-members.
The most popular option is the top-end R99 Premium plan, which features unlimited free same-day and next-day deliveries and collections without any minimum order amounts.
Subscribers also get ten free standard deliveries for bulky items in a month.
The latter is typically priced at R200 per order, so just one order of a large product will already make up for the subscription cost.
The first five Mr D orders of the month with a minimum value of R150 also qualify for free delivery, while subscribers also get unlimited grocery deliveries with a minimum value of R350.
The R39 Standard subscription has more limited benefits but may still be suited to less demanding shoppers.
For orders over R500, the Standard subscription includes two free same-day deliveries and collections and unlimited free next-day deliveries and collections on Takealot.
It also includes a free restaurant and grocery delivery on Mr D every month, with respective minimum order values of R150 and R350.
The table below summarises the differences between the TakealotMore Standard and Premium plans.

New leader and plans for 2025
To guide and evolve the subscription, Takealot recently appointed Annie Adams as the head of TakealotMore.
Adams has over five years of experience at the retailer and played a key role in several major Takealot Group Business Development projects, including the launch of the subscription service.
One area where TakealotMore still falls short of Prime is in its benefits selection, which is currently limited primarily to online shopping and delivery services.
For example, Prime includes access to video and music streaming subscriptions, e-book platforms, and even healthcare benefits.
Takealot told MyBroadband it was always looking for ways to add more value to the service.
“In October last year, we added members-only TakealotMore deals on Takealot and Mr D,” Takealot said.
“In February, we introduced a no minimum order spend requirement on same-day delivery for Takealot customers in eligible areas.”
“Coming up in March, our ‘So March More’ campaign will see our minimum spend requirement on Pick n Pay grocery shops via Mr D drop to only R100 for Premium members as well as a 15% off discount on selected Mr D restaurants.”
The retailer added there were some other exciting benefits and additional campaigns in the pipeline for 2025.
Takealot also believes its deep understanding of South African shoppers and their needs gave it an edge over international rivals as it understands how to deliver exceptional value and convenience tailored specifically to locals.
