Vodacom launches smart metering system to tackle water crisis

Vodacom Business has partnered with Mezzanine to launch the Digital Water Tower platform, which uses demand management reports, geospatial data, and network topology maps to optimise supply efficiency and reduce water losses.
This forms part of an initiative by Vodacom and Strategic Water Partners Network (SWPN) to address water security challenges in Gauteng, which suffers from high water losses.
“Our commitment to digital transformation extends beyond connectivity — we believe in using our technology capabilities to drive sustainable impact,” said director of Vodacom Business Videsha Proothveerajh.
“By working with key stakeholders, including the public sector and industry partners, we are addressing current water challenges while laying the foundation for a more resilient future.”
The Digital Water Tower will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase will analyse how water is used in areas around the province by gathering existing data sets, including water meter readings and usage reports.
Vodacom says that the average South African uses 64 litres more than the global daily average and that supply constraints are expected to remain until 2028.
The project’s second phase will involve the platform determining when interventions are needed by performing impact assessments, which Vodacom says will also assist in monitoring the efficiency of consumer and supplier services.
Vodacom added that the platform will also help facilitate collaboration between citizens, municipalities, and other stakeholders to increase water security.
“Collaboration and innovation are essential to tackling South Africa’s water security challenges,” says SWPN Private Sector Co-Chair and SAB Africa Sustainability Manager Alyssa Jooste.
“Through our partnership with Vodacom Business and Mezzanine, the SWPN is committed to driving smart, data-driven solutions that enhance water efficiency, reduce losses, and support sustainable supply.”
“Integrating smart solutions into water management will help improve efficiency, reduce losses, and ensure reliable water access, providing sustainable benefits for the Gauteng communities we serve,” Proothveerajh added.
