One city dominates fixed Internet speeds in South Africa

The top six suburbs with the highest fixed Internet speeds in South Africa are all located in the City of Tshwane, according to a new analysis by MyBroadband Insights.
We assessed 168,960 results recorded by users of the MyBroadband Speed Test website in the first quarter of 2025 using fixed Internet connections across South Africa.
From that analysis, MyBroadband Insights determined the top 10 neighbourhoods with the fastest speeds.
The suburb with the highest average download speed was Doornpoort, one of the South African capital’s oldest residential areas.
Located just north of the Magaliesberg Mountain range, Just Imagine Properties describes Doornpoort as a “laid-back, country-style” neighbourhood.
That character is likely formed by its origins as a farming community and its proximity to the Lowveld bushveld region.
Testers in the Pretoria North suburb recorded an average download speed of 81.44Mbps and average upload speed of 72.45Mbps during the first three months of 2025.
Doornpoort also had the lowest average latency of any suburbs in the top 10, with a ping of 10.49ms.
The suburb previously featured in ninth place in the fourth quarter of 2024.
A quick search for connectivity options on Afrihost’s website showed that at least two major fibre network operators (FNOs) had infrastructure in Doornpoort — Openserve and Frogfoot.
These FNOs boast entry-level speeds of 50Mbps and 60Mbps, respectively, which may be contributing to the higher average speeds in the suburb.
South Africa’s two other major open-access FNOs — MetroFibre and Vumatel — offer lower entry-level speeds of 20Mbps and 25Mbps, respectively.
The suburb with the second-highest download speed — Wierdapark in Centurion — had the highest average upload speed of 78.35Mbps.
Rounding out the top five were the Pretoria East suburbs of Moreleta Park, Garsfontein, and Faerie Glen.
All three also featured in the top 10 fastest fixed Internet suburbs in the last quarter of 2024, with the latter coming out on top in the instance.
Waverley — another suburb in the northern parts of Pretoria — ranked sixth in Q1 2025.
The only three non-Tshwane suburbs in the top 10 were Northmead in Benoni, the Cape Town City Centre, and Glen Marais in Kempton Park, which placed seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively.
Rounding out the ranking was a seventh Tshwane suburb — Lyttelton Manor — which is located in Centurion.
Another noteworthy finding from the analysis was that the average download and upload speeds across the top 10 fastest neighbourhoods were slightly slower than in the last quarter of 2024, at 73.81Mbps compared to 74.66Mbps.
However, latency has improved somewhat — dropping from 15.18ms in Q4 2024 to 14.49ms in Q1 2025.
The table below summarises the top 10 neighbourhoods with the fastest fixed Internet speeds in South Africa in the first quarter of 2025.
