EcoFlow PowerStream Balcony Solar System tested – Home solar made easy

Home solar doesn’t have to be a complicated, permanent installation that costs an arm and a leg.

This is best shown by EcoFlow’s PowerStream Balcony Solar System, which is a great solution for every South African.

Whether you live in a building that doesn’t allow you to install a traditional solar system, or don’t want to make the expensive investment into a permanent system – the PowerStream’s plug-and-play design lets you harness the sun’s energy quickly and easily.

Our system comprised the following elements:

  • EcoFlow 800W PowerStream Microinverter
  • EcoFlow 1,024Wh (1kWh) DELTA 2 Portable Power Station
  • EcoFlow 160W Portable Solar Panel
  • EcoFlow Smart Plugs

However, configurations exist with different portable power stations, no portable power stations, and no solar panels – allowing you to pick and choose which elements you need.

The extensive scalability of the EcoFlow PowerStream setup also enables you to easily add a second solar panel or an extra battery to your power station if needed.

Simple setup

The EcoFlow PowerStream is a foolproof plug-and-play system.

Each cable only fits the specific port that it’s meant for, removing any confusion, while no drilling or hammering is required.

We were able to set it up without using the instruction booklet at all. Here’s a quick step-by-step of how we did it:

  1. Position the solar panel to face the sun (by hanging it over our balcony).
  2. Plug the solar panel into the microinverter.
  3. Plug the microinverter into the power station.
  4. Hit the power button on the power station.

Within moments, the EcoFlow 160W Portable Solar Panels were generating power that we could feed into our home grid.

This functionality makes it a fully-fledged miniature backup system that, according to EcoFlow, can save you up to R3,213 annually on your electricity bill.

Another benefit we enjoyed with this system is that the EcoFlow 160W portable solar panel is IP68-rated.

This makes it resistant to dust and rain, meaning we could install it for optimal solar generation without worrying about the panel being damaged by the elements.

Energy management made simple

When we had excess power being generated, we connected the PowerStream inverter to the DELTA 2 portable power station, which stored this energy.

Along with its 1,024Wh battery capacity, the DELTA 2 supports up to a 1,800W output – which can be boosted to 2,400W using EcoFlow’s built-in X-Boost technology.

This ensures the DELTA 2 can power appliances like fridges, microwaves, and even certain coffee makers for a set period of time.

South Africans will particularly enjoy this functionality, as you have enough wattage to perform the tasks you want to do even while load-shedding is ongoing.

Further ease-of-use is enabled by combining the DELTA 2 and PowerStream with EcoFlow Smart Plugs for superior power management.

These Smart Plugs connect to your Wi-Fi network, allowing you to wirelessly switch off appliances when they are consuming too much energy for your liking.

The smart plugs also show you how much power each appliance is using, enabling you to quickly see which devices can connect to your EcoFlow PowerStream system at the same time to optimise your energy usage.

All of this is managed through the EcoFlow smartphone app, allowing you to control each element within the system from the palm of your hand.

The EcoFlow app also lets you see how much power your solar panels are generating so that you can position them optimally in relation to the sun.

Who it’s for

The EcoFlow PowerStream Balcony Solar System is ideal for anyone looking to explore the benefits of solar power without committing to a permanent installation.

The plug-and-play design makes it one of the most user-friendly solar solutions available.

The EcoFlow PowerStream Balcony Solar System is an investment that adds convenience and peace of mind.
