5Mbps uncapped mobile Internet for R5 per day from MTN
MTN South Africa has launched GigZone, an initiative through which its prepaid customers can enjoy uncapped 5Mbps Internet for R5 per day at selected community locations.
Designed for underserved areas, MTN GigZone provides 24 hours of uncapped Internet access at its locations. MTN is rolling out the initiative in phases across selected South African townships.
It is currently being deployed in neighbourhoods in Soweto and Gugulethu.
According to MTN, the initiative is designed to provide seamless connectivity with minimal buffering and inconsistency.
“This initiative is more than just the launch of a new service; it’s about working together with communities to improve and expand digital access,” says Seun Soladoye, general manager for consumer prepaid at MTN South Africa.
“It will create new opportunities for our customers, enabling them to access educational content, search for jobs, and browse the internet on South Africa’s best network, all for just R5.”
The company says the project aligns with its Ambition 2025 strategy, which focuses on bridging the digital divide, empowering the community, and ensuring everyone can benefit from a modern, connected life.
Customers in areas with MTN GigZone locations can activate the service by dialling *136*36# when they enter an MTN Zone.
The service automatically detects when customers leave a GigZone coverage area and revert to standard rates.
“At MTN, we believe that no community should be left behind in the digital era. MTN GigZone is our commitment to making affordable, high-quality internet accessible to all,” said Soladoye.
“This is just the beginning, and through continued collaboration and customer feedback, we will refine, expand, and enhance this initiative to serve even more communities across the country.”
According to the MTN GigZone information page, the operator is piloting the service with prepaid customers in selected locations in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
A rollout to similar communities nationwide will only follow if the pilot is successful. Current areas are as follows:
- Soweto — Jabavu (Makhetha Market)
- Soweto — Chiawelo (Chiawelo Clinic)
- Soweto — Devland (Matlapeng Shopping Centre)
- Alexandra — (Alex Heritage Community Centre)

All data purchased for MTN GigZone use will be valid 24 hours from activation. However, it will be unusable outside of MTN GigZone locations.
MTN GigZone data is only usable with smartphone devices. It cannot be used as a hotspot for other devices.
MTN will inform prepaid customers when entering a GigZone, when purchasing a GigZone bundle, and when leaving an area of GigZone coverage.
