Date change for Comic Con Africa 2025 in Joburg

This year’s Comic Con Africa in Johannesburg will take place a month earlier than in previous years, as the organisers have been forced to shift the event to August 2025 due to renovations and other events at Nasrec.

According to a Comic Con Africa Facebook post, the event will now be held from 28 to 31 August 2025 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre at Nasrec due to the conference centre being unavailable and the need to “protect the interest of its fans and the event”.

The organisers have also said that another event will take place at the venue in September. However, it hasn’t disclosed which event forced them to move Comic Con forward.

“This change is unavoidable due to a major international event taking place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, which will be announced in the media shortly,” said Mogul Media, the organiser behind Comic Con in South Africa.

Comic Con Africa show director Carla Massmann apologised for the inconvenience.

“Comic Con Africa’s fans often plan months ahead of time to attend the convention and travel from all around South Africa to get there. Comic Con’s incredible fans are the reason behind everything we do,” TV with Thinus quoted Massmann as saying.

“Whilst we are disappointed that we must change the dates of our 2025 festival, the Johannesburg Expo Centre is the perfect home for Comic Con Africa and so changing the venue was not an option.”

Massmann explained that an event like Comic Con, with over 70,000 people in attendance, requires a large venue with multi-use spaces to accommodate the many aspects of the convention.

“The size of the venue is of key importance,” she said.

“The Johannesburg Expo Centre has the capacity and space we need to accommodate our high volume of fans.”

Massmann says Media Mogul is excited to see the result of the renovations, as it believes the upgrades will positively contribute to fan experiences at future Comic Con events.

Comic Con Africa 2025 will feature gaming and eSports tournaments, cosplay, tabletop gaming, fandom merch, anime and manga, comics, and trading card games, among various other activities.

It will also be attended by film and series personalities, feature panels, and Q&A sessions.

Comic Con Cape Town is still set to take place between 1 and 4 May in the Cape Town Convention Centre, and Comic Con Africa 2026 is again expected to happen in September 2026.
