PlayStation Plus price changes in South Africa

Sony has started notifying PlayStation Plus members in South Africa that their subscription fees will increase on or after 24 June 2025, depending on their payment date.

“This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service,” Sony stated.

“Any membership changes you make prior to your next payment, such as upgrades, downgrades or buying additional time, will update your plan based on the new prices.”

South Africa is among several countries where the price of PlayStation Plus is increasing. However, Sony has yet to issue a statement with the full pricing changes or update its website.

Sony officially announced a similar price increase in South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia several days ago.

Customers in Australia and Turkey reported receiving similar emails to those Sony is sending to its South African subscriber base.

MyBroadband’s analysis shows that the South African price hikes are between 16% and 19.1% across PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Deluxe.

For example, PlayStation Plus Essential will increase from R119 to R139 per month, while the monthly Extra subscription is increasing from R179 to R209.

PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscribers will be paying R2,199 for an annual subscription — up from R1,879.

Sony’s notifications to PlayStation Plus subscribers comes as the company announced that PS5 prices in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand increased on 14 April 2025.

“With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets,” it stated.

Local PlayStation distributor Gamefinity has confirmed that South Africa would also be affected by the price increase, although the new recommended retail price for the country has not been confirmed yet.
